PCB’s Stage for Champions Trophy Amid India Travel Controversy

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invested millions of dollars in upgrading stadiums in Lahore, Karachi, and Rawalpindi, all of which are set to host the upcoming Champions Trophy from February 19 to March 9. The tournament will see participation from England, South Africa, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan, Australia, and the host nations, Pakistan and India.

However, a significant cloud looms over the event as the International Cricket Council (ICC) previously informed the PCB that India has declined to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. This decision follows a long-standing hiatus, with India not touring Pakistan since the Asia Cup in 2008.

Pakistan, firm in its stance, has refused to organize India’s games at a neutral venue, a compromise it made during the Asia Cup last year when India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka. PCB Chairman Naqvi emphasized, “We believe sports and politics should remain separate and no country should mix the two. Even now, I still have positive expectations about the Champions Trophy.”

The PCB recently raised concerns with the ICC regarding India’s reluctance to travel, but as of yet, they have not received a response. “We have sent them (ICC) the questions we had,” Naqvi stated. “We are still waiting for their response.”

Adding to the tension, last week saw controversy when the Champions Trophy tour, which began in Islamabad, was initially set to include Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir. However, following objections from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the ICC removed Muzaffarabad from the tour itinerary.

The Champions Trophy tour will continue, visiting the other seven participating countries, and is scheduled to return to Pakistan in January, ahead of the tournament.
